Picking up where the original series left off, Scott Bernard continues his search for Rick Hunter and the fate of the SDF-3. The Robotech Expeditionary Force stages their final assault on the Invid to liberate Earth at all costs along with REF pilot Scott Bernard and the Invid princess Ariel's parallel planetside efforts at the alien's stronghold, Reflex Point. Just before the attack, the fleet gets a distress call from Admiral Rick Hunter and their flagship, SDF-3. In the ensuing mission, which only manages to rescue the android Janice Em, the REF discover that they have been betrayed by their own ally, the Haydenites, whose powerful technology they have supplied now is revealed to be designed to devastatingly enable their own plans of conquest even as the Invid withdraw. As Scott and Ariel join the fleet, the disparate pair and Janice must overcome their comrade's deep distrust to find a means to stop their newest foe before it is too late. Despite what the other reviewer has commented about "The Shadow Chronicles", this movie was made with the fans at heart. Yes there are loose ends with missing characters like Minmei, Lisa, Max and others, but you need to realize that this is being made to reintroduce people to the legacy that is ROBOTECH. The fact that they used Rick's, Scott's, the Regent's, Vince's and many other cast members voices from the series, shows the dedication the production team spent to make it as authentic as possible. For Christ's sake, they use lines lifted from the last 3 episodes of Robotech in the movie. For any TRUE ROBOTECH FAN, they close a lot of open questions, they use Minmei's songs, and try to keep the style as close to the original style… And to top it all off the use the original designs for the ships and mecha.<br/><br/>Please watch this movie with one thing in mind. This is a modern reworking of the series in an attempt to stay true to what Robotech represented. They do a very good job to keep as much continuity as possible without making it too confusing for those who have not seen the series or remember much of what happened at the end of the series. Don't's nit pick all the issues, enjoy it for what it is, Robotech for a new generation of fans.<br/><br/>Below are my responses to the other reviewers comments made about the movie…<br/><br/>"In all honesty, the Sentinels OVA was MUCH better." All Sentinels did was tie the the first and second series together. It was not as good as it could have been. Yes it had the animation and character style of the series, but you cant expect them to use such an old style in a modern rendition of the series. But seriously, Lisa's Hair? The use of the stock footage from the series? Very Bad dialog? Should I continue?<br/><br/>"Who is to blame for this mishap? Definitely Tommy Yune. By the way, who the hell is this Korean guy? They should have gotten Carl Macek on the project. What were they thinking? I mean without Macek you can't have Robotech. He made the bloody thing." Tommy Did a great job reworking the movie. Frank Agrama was part of the movie screenplay (he helped with Sentinals too so =P ) and Macek did advise on the screenplay. LRN2Research before you make comments like this. Where to start? Shadow Chronicles was a big disappointment. 22 years waiting for a new Robotech story to watch and this is what you get, a bad script, a bad story, bad character redesigns (Rick Hunter looks nothing like him, so does Ariel, Scott and Louie are recognizable but they got heavy bad redesigns too). The story is about the look of Admiral Hunter by the Expeditionary Force, and when all where waiting for him to be a main character of the movie he just appears a few seconds on a screen (and he looks nothing like him, did I already say that?) The animation is very bad in some parts, the character movements looks artificial, and there are parts where the 3d looks like made by an amateur 3d artist making a flash movie. Who to blame? Tommy Yune for the story, direction and redesigns, Ford Riley for the script, and Doctor movie and Harmony Gold in general for the delivered animation. The movie also lacked the real presence of Robotech's creator Carl Macek, who was only consulted and a few things. So was it all bad? No, there were some interesting battle scenes, the voice acting was good, and the music was just OK. Not too much for over 20 years of waiting.
In 2002, the production company did announce a new Robotech television series set for 2004. By the time 2004 rolled around, plans had changed for the project to become a feature-length movie that would act as a "pilot" for either a future television series or a continuous series of movies. While the original movie was slated to be released in late 2005, the production was pushed back until late 2005/early 2006 for numerous reasons. One reason claimed by Harmony Gold, the production company, was that the movie was expanded from 75 mintues to 88 mintues. Another reason for the delay was so that several voices could be re-dubbed in late 2005, after the initial voicework had been done in the Fall of 2004.<br/><br/>Just as the movie was completed, distribution negotiations with a company had fallen through. Harmony Gold's official stance was that there were clauses they found unfavorable in the contract.<br/><br/>It wasn't until July of 2006 when Harmony Gold signed a deal with anime distirbutor Funimation. Originally announcing a DVD street date of November 21, 2006 with a limited theatrical run preceding it, the DVD date was moved to February 6, 2007. The main explanation given by Harmony Gold is that a February date would allow for retailers to have more shelve space for the DVD. As announced by Harmony Gold, plans are underway for a limited theatrical release. Because no film prints are being made of the movie, it can only be released in theaters with digital projection. No exact dates have been announced yet. The first part of the movie overlaps with the final episodes of the original television series, and continues the story beyond that point. Many of the characters from the original series are integrated into the storyline.
